A Ph. D in Horribleness by Dragsis A Ph. D in Horribleness by Dragsis
Advanced Art assignment, human portrait using words as value, Sharpie and Faber-Castell pens on paper.

Aaaaaand here we have Neil Patrick Harris as Doctor Horrible from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog with his face covered in lyrics from the series!
If you don't see it, try squinting at it or standing about five feet from your monitor. It works, I swear.
I'm not really sure how I feel about this; I worked really hard on it and it's still a couple weeks overdue, and I like how it came out, but I feel like I could have done better especially with the coat and the neck area. To be honest, I was just kinda nervous about putting the ink down because I was afraid of screwing the whole thing up, but it turned out okay, so I guess it's okay.
That'll do, doc. That'll do.

I would love to offer it as a poster, but there's definitely some copyright issues going on there, unfortunately!

You're actually the first person to suggest that, and I've tried tweeting it to him, but he probably never saw it. Maybe I should try again?

Awww, thank you so much! I really appreciate that.
I totally think you should give this technique a try. It takes a really long time and it can get really frustrating when the marker keeps drying out, but it's totally worth it in the end.
All of my other classmates did one of a person of their own choices, and they all turned out fantastic!

What a great idea! I love how it turned out (and I recognized NPH immediately) :D! I might have to give this technique a try someday :D!

Did you first do a sketch, and then fill in the words?

Awwwww, thanks!
I highly recommend this technique, it's tons of fun. It really is.
And the process was starting with a basic outline of the subject, then drawing in shapes for where the different values would go. Like if there was a shadow on the side of his face, you'd draw a line there, and if there was a highlight on the forehead, you'd also draw a line there. In the end, you have kind of a "Color by number" setup, and then you just use different thicknesses and shapes of letters to shade it in!
